Kevin's 13 year commitment

Kevin Davis has not missed a single day of school from Kindergarten through his senior year of high school.
Let that sink in.
When he was sick, when Philly’s sidewalks were covered with snow and ice, when all of his friends participated in Senior Ditch Day, Kevin would say, “I’ma sit my behind right here in school.” And he did, for thirteen consecutive school years—within a district that struggles with truancy.
Kevin promised his grandmother before she passed in 2010 that he’d be the first person in his family to pursue a post-secondary education out of high school. His passion for culinary stems from his family – his uncle Jeffrey, aunt Dominique, aunt Muffy, and his mom, Miriam have always wanted to open a restaurant but that family dream has yet to come to fruition. Kevin has learned some skills from an internship in Germantown’s Rose Petal Café, but it’s been his family members who he has primarily learned how to cook from. Now, he is the one who takes meal requests from them, particularly when it comes to his Italian dishes and soul food.
Kevin’s dream is to open his own restaurant or food truck, named after his grandmother. It will be called Oma Goodness— (he’s looked into patenting that name for $350 so he says, “Chill. Don’t steal it”). His determination toward that dream has inspired his 14 year old cousin, Autumn, to pursue baking, as she hopes to follow in his footsteps one day. (Kevin promised me one of her strawberry shortcake cheesecakes if I can help him out and I fully intend on cashing in on that).
As Kevin’s Literature teacher this past year, I’ve tried multiple times to get him to take pride in his amazing accomplishment of NEVER having missed a day of a school. He shrugs it off. He says things like, “it’s easy; just come to school.” When his peers toy with the idea of taking a day off after finals or for an optional field trip, Kevin just says to no one in particular, “I’ma sit my behind right here in school.” I love that about him. He’s a laid-back kid. But talk to him about Oma Goodness. He lights up. I’m quite certain he’s never going to miss a day of post-secondary school or work until he can open Oma Goodness. Please help contribute any small amount to help Kevin cover the cost of his $25,000 tuition at JNA Culinary Arts Institute!
