I am a Community organizer, father, early childhood educator and social justice advocate based in Seattle. I am the founding director of Columbia City Preschool of Arts and Culture, a preschool founded on the principles of racial equity and the  co-founder of  Kids & Race Seattle which has been featured in Parent Map Magazine (https://www.parentmap.com/ article/racism-families-push- for-racial-justice) and has to this date served over 500 people. My various actions around race and social justice have made front page news in Seattle and have been featured on the local news on numerous occasions.

Kids and Race is an ongoing program with two parts; it includes programming for adults and programming for children. For adults, the programming has included recognizing racism in several forms, expert lectures on racial identity development in children, a presentation on how narratives are constructed along with how to build counter narratives, and practice scenarios for small group discussions. For children, the program involves age-appropriate lessons on recognizing how children of color are portrayed in society, as well as discussions and fun activities.

The Kids and Race program has enjoyed massive success. We have offered the workshop in 7 differeent locations  since January 2015, maxing out attendance at the last three events. We are fielding request into spring of next year to offer events across the state of Washington, media interview request and partnerships with organizations such as Families of Colors Seattle (FOCS) and The Program for Early Parent support (PEPS)

We are however reaching capacity to field and manage all of these exciting opportunities. We are limited by staffing cost and organizational capacity. Additional funding will allow us to expand the program within the city of Seattle, the state of Washington, and across the west coast.

The need for racial and cultural competency education is multi-layered and deep, this is why we have chosen to focus our attention on teaching young children. According to the Harvard Education Review a child's racial identity development can be set by as early as 5 years old. Early childhood education offers an important opportunity to stop biased attitudes from developing in the first place.

This is an oppertunity to particiapate in a program that has already changed lives. The children and families that your support will help us reach are the foundation for a more just and equitable future.

*Kids and Race is a joint venture of The Well UMC and Columbia City Church of Hope. All funds donated are Tax Deductable and will only be used for Kids and Race workshops and related programing.
