Kids Container Cafe

My name is Christianne and I am a Senior at Johns Hopkins University, majoring in Global Environmental Change & Sustainability. For my senior capstone project, I am taking a retired shipping container (pictured) that was graciously donated to my project by Hamburg Süd and converting it into an eco-friendly kids cafe and urban farming workshop space for children in the Sandtown-Winchester Community, most affected by the 2015 uprising following the death of Freddie Gray. This outdoor kids cafe and work space will be used by The Kids Safe Zone to specifically aid in their healthy eating initiatives as the Sandtown Winchester community is an identified food desert with limited to no access to healthy food choices.
The Kids Safe Zone provides a safe, comfortable, nurturing, secure, and fun place for children ages 5-17 in the Sandtown-Winchester Community with limited access to resources that the closing of Baltimore City recreation centers created. The Kids Safe Zone offers recreation such as games and organized sports teams, a computer lab, girls and boys mentoring programs, peer led support groups, licensed counseling, field trips, a study lab, and homework assistance. One of the most recent additions to The Kids Safe Zone programming is a new partnership with GoGanics, an organic food truck that provides tasty, fun, and recognizable food favorites by Nureya Monroe.
I am currently still working to establish partnerships and solicit in-kind donations to augment the financial budget. In addition, I am hoping to raise $4000. This budget includes the cost of construction and furnishing, upkeep of the food workshops, electricity in the container, and decor items such as posters, lights, and fans.
