Medical Mission Trip to Haiti
Donation protected
In late July 2016 five students (Caitlin Haenig, Carlee Komoroski, Krystina Carcone, Jacyln Beck and Tonya Matteri) from King’s College Physician Assistant Program will be embarking on a medical mission trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti as part of Amer-Haitian Bon Zami Inc. This corporation has made the foundation of the House of Hope and The George Shinn Foundation Medical Clinic possible.
The House of Hope is a children’s home for orphaned and abandoned Haitian children as well as a school for Haitian children. Their ultimate goal is to prepare these children to become healthy, well-adjusted adults – spiritually, physically, and emotionally; as well as to be able to provide for themselves and their families within their impoverished nation.
The Medical Clinic offers care first to the children attending of the House of Hope, and then their families. Diseases that are routinely treated with medication and diet in the U.S. can be life threatening in a country with almost no affordable health care available. Additionally, there is only one doctor to every 10,000 Haitians. Therefore, the impact of the clinic to these Haitian children and their families makes a world of a difference, sometimes the difference between life and death. For example, the clinic provides immunizations for childhood diseases that are not ordinarily readily accessible to the Haitian community, because yes, diseases like Polio still exist in Haiti. The clinic also provides medical ‘seminars’ to educate the the Haitian community about Healthcare topics, such as hygiene and sexually transmitted diseases, in order to promote a better quality of life. The impact of the medical mission to The George Shinn Foundation Medical Clinic are astronomical. On previous medical missions completed over 300 patients were seen in a one week period
The money donated will be used to fund the trip of the five physician assistant students as well as toward medical supplies to bring to the medical clinic. Even the smallest of donations will go a long way. Thank you so much for your generosity and time.
