Kortnaé Ferdinand's Fight Against Sickle Cell
Donation protected
Kortnaé Ferdinand is a 5 year old girl from Trinidad and Tobago, who has been battling sickle cell anemia since she was 5 months old; she has experienced extreme pain, hospitalization, repeated blood transfusions and near death experiences. We are Kortnae's family- parents and cousins, both from Trinidad and Tobago and the United States who are currently fundraising for Kortnaé's recovery.
Initially, Kortnaé was admitted to the hospital on February 6th, 2019 for back pain, however her health quickly deteriorated as both her lungs collapsed and she had to be placed on life support. She is currently in the Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Mt Hope Hospital in Trinidad fighting for her life. Kortnaé was given a blood exchange which helped improve her vitals, unfortunately, she suffered a major stroke which caused swelling to the left side of the brain causing pressure on the right side of the brain. As for now there is no mobility on the right side of her body however nothing has been confirmed as she is heavily sedated as the doctors do not want her moving too much and dislodge any of the tubes currently helping her lungs to recover.
In recent years, a breakthrough bone marrow transplant procedure is changing the course of the sickle cell narrative for many patients. As Kortnaé's health progresses, in the next six months we will have to continue chronic blood transfusions at the hospital until she is stable enough to be flown to either the US or Canada for the bone marrow transplant, which costs $500, 000 USD and we hope this will be raised by August 2019.
The funds will be used to do physiotherapy to help regain mobility to her right side of her body, send samples to verify if her brother or parents will be a donor match for the transplant, the bone marrow transplant procedure and last but not least, Kortnaé's recovery. We are still researching the best Hospital to provide Kortnaé's procedure and once identified the funds will be paid to the hospital through checks from the beneficiary account.
Please give hope to the Ferdinand family and help Kortnaé live a life with no sickle cell disease.
Any amount of donation is welcome and will be appreciated.
