Kozkalesi Survey- Antioch

Donation protected
We are raising funds for a 15-days (1-15 September 2018) survey at Kozkalesi in order to start the documentation of this beautiful crusader site located 13km south of Antioch (modern Antakya/Hatay-Turkey). This is the first step towards a five-years project (Bilkent University- Dr. Ayşe Belgin-Henry) and our aim for the first survey is to get organized for the intensive next season that we are planning.

Kozkalesi is a crusader castle constructed in the 12th century.  Aimery of Limoges, the Latin Patriarch of Antioch resided in the castle from 1165 onward. The castle could be defended during the 1268 Baybars attacks in the region, when Antioch Principality fell, but has been lost to the Mamelukes in 1275. It might have stayed in the Mameluke control up until the 15th century.

We will be a small team of eight specialists and students concentrating essentially on the documentation of the architecture. We will be sketching intensively in order to understand the structure better, concentrate on establishing our GIS systems and discover the vicinity.

We have several academic applications in order to fund our study. This said, since this is the first year it is harder to show the potential of the project and we do not want to risk our fieldwork opportunity. Especially not after we received the survey permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism immediately after our first application.

The 2500 € that we are hoping to raise is the amount we need to work for 15 days as a team of eight. If the academic applications do not work we will adjust our planning according to your donations.

AND if the academical applications work, any donation received from you will be utilized for the survey for this season or the next. For example, we would be very happy to work with additional students or use better technologies for the documentation.

All expenses will be explained and justified through the webpage that we are putting together right now. The link will be ready and announced here before September and we will be very happy to share our experience with you from the same address. We really appreciate your support for the project!
