Hi, my name is Kyle Carragher and I am a trampoline gymnast. I am 18 years old and have been competing in trampoline gymnastics since 2009. I am an accomplished and serious athlete. For highlights of my accomplishments so far, see below.
I was recently selected to represent Canada in Denmark and England for the World Age Group Championships and the British National Championships; there, I will have a chance to secure a spot on the Senior National Team and compete at the World Championships, also in Denmark later this year. I have gone to several other World Age Group Competitions (WAGS) and International meets, where I have placed as high as second on double mini trampoline, and third on tumbling against the best in the world of my age group . But since moving up to the highest level an athlete in my sport can participate in, I have finally been able to pursue one of my biggest goals; to compete at the Senior World Championships.
Gymnastics has always been a major focus of my life. Since the age of 7 when I fell in love with the sport, I have dedicated countless hours to refine my skills and make it to the level of competition that would allow me to eventually compete on the international scene. This love of gymnastics has always pushed my limits, and taught me to fight to be the best I can possibly be. I was lucky to have found a passion at such a young age because at the age of 8, my dad passed away, completely changing my life. Gymnastics gave me something to focus on while navigating through a large rollercoaster of emotions. Throughout all of this, my mom selflessly dedicated herself to helping me fulfill my dreams and to stay motivated through times that could have ended my gymnastics career. Whether it was fundraising so I could make it to my first National competition at 11 years old, making sure I got to and from training and competitions, or always holding down a part time job as well as being a full time teacher, shededicated her time and money to always make sure I could focus on gymnastics and pursue my goals.
At the age of 14, with the 2011 World Age Age Groups in England only 4 months away, my love for the sport was greatly tested. I found out that I needed to get surgery on my right knee to fix a severed knee cap. This procedure would take me out of the sport for 8 months. Although being a setback, this time allowed me to find a greater appreciation for the sport and also renewed my motivation to be the best athlete I could be. One month after the end of my rehabilitation, I competed at the National Championships and won the double mini trampoline event.
In the future, I hope to be in a place where young athletes can look up to me as a positive influence in their sporting careers and hopefully inspire them to stay focused on their passion and their dreams, especially through adversity and self doubt. I also hope to one day participate in the medical field, where I can help athletes stay at their peak shape and be able to train and compete to their full potential with a healthy body and strong mind.
I am taking the first semester off of post secondary education to focus on training, and to increase my funds. I have a job and am working hard to subsidize my costs to attend. Unfortunately, at this point, government funding for amateur sport is quite low and I cannot rely on this as a source of significant funding. The deadline is approaching and if I can avoid it, I would like to keep my family out of further debt. In order to represent Canada in these competitions, training alone takes up to 4 hours a day, 6 days a week, no matter what so I can stay in top physical condition. I will need $10 000 to assist with travel costs, uniform costs, training and competition fees.
Every dollar donated would mean alot to me, and would bring me one step closer to reaching my goals.
Thank you for your time!
