Kyoto is the Key!

Why Japan? Why Kyoto?

Kyoto is the key!

The Japanese nation is one of the largest unreached population groups in the world today. They are a physically and materialistically rich nation. The Japanese nation is home to some of the greatest historical and cultural sites in the world and is constantly rated among the most beautiful countries in the world. Japan is an amazing country and yet they have the sixth highest suicide rate in the world! For being a country with the majestic title of being the “Land of the Rising Sun” this great nation is in reality one of the spiritually darkest countries in the world. And because of this they are a nation of people drowning in hopelessness and crying out for a God who can bring them into the light of hope and freedom both in this world and the next!

This is a rare point in history! Historically speaking the Japanese nation has been closed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, but the times have changed! We believe that God loves the Japanese people and is desiring to bring a Great Awakening to this nation. And we believe that this Great Awakening must start in the ancient city of Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto is the physical, spiritual, and historical “heart” of the Japanese country. Kyoto is a world city and has the potential to influence not just the Japanese Nation, but also the Middle East and other parts of Asia. If you are wondering how Kyoto may impact the Middle East, let me explain; many of the princes of the Arab nations come to Kyoto to study, and this gives us a foothold and opportunity to share the gospel with key individuals who can then take the gospel back with them to the Middle East. And this is an opportunity that has been largely unavailable elsewhere. This city has and continues to define the spiritual climate of the Japanese nation. If this city experiences a Great Awakening, then the nation of Japan will quickly follow! And that is why we are focused on reaching this city!

Who is Liberty Church Kyoto?

Liberty Church Kyoto is part of the family of Liberty Church out of Pensacola, Florida (http://www.libertychurch.net ) affiliated with the LNI(Liberty Network International) Network (http://www.libertynetwork.net ). We are a bible believing, Jesus loving, community of believer’s who desire to give our all to see this Great Awakening become a reality here in Kyoto, Japan. Our hope and desire is to build a first century style church following the Great Commission of our Lord by reaching out to our Jerusalem first; which for us is the city of Kyoto.

Our Vision Statement
Our Vision is to reach the people of Japan – striving to see a Great Awakening start in Japan specifically in Kyoto (the Spiritual, Cultural, and Historical heart of Japan) – Ready to lay down our lives to bring the love of Jesus Christ to the Japanese people – Desiring to see hearts turned, lives transformed, families restored, and Christ’s name lifted high all across this land from the Northern most islands of Hokkaido to the Southern most islands of Okinawa.

Meet the Team!

Mike and Seira Wogsland (Teaching Pastor)

Mike was born on Jan. 25th, 1981, and from the very beginning the devil has been trying to kill Mike, with every thing from Brain Cancer to Spinal Meningitis, from a Skull Fracture to Blindness. The Devil tried again and again, but God had a mission for Mike. From the age of 4, Mike knew he was called to be a Pastor in the city of Kyoto, Japan, and after Mike met Jesus Christ at the age of 17 he became fully committed to spending his life in Service to Christ. In 2008 God led Mike and his family to Japan, and then in 2014 God led Mike and his family along with his team members to the beautiful city of Kyoto, Japan, where they have pioneered a Church plant called Liberty Church Kyoto, with the vision of bringing the love and hope of Christ to the wonderful nation of Japan. Doing so by introducing people in an intimate way with the risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Mike realizes that he is living on borrowed time, and wants to make the most of every opportunity! Mike strives to live his life by the famous words of Missionary William Carey, Attempt Great Things for God; Expect Great Things from God!
Mike is married to the beautiful Seira Wogsland. Seira was born in Shizouka, Japan. She is a talented artist specializing in oil portrait paintings. She is passionately in love with Jesus and loves to tell everyone about her “Super Daddy”, Jesus Christ. Seira and Mike met in College in Florida, and were married in 2003. They now have 4 strong, handsome boys (Keido, Kento, Kairo, and Kenya) and a beautiful daughter, Kiera (Kiwi).

Chris and Maiko McKee (Pastor of Youth)
Chris is from Northern Ireland and Maiko is from Osaka, Japan. They met in university in the UK and after getting married moved to Japan in 2004. In Japan they have been involved in two church-planting projects so far with a specific focus on children’s ministry in both. After those experiences, and a seven-month break in the UK, they returned to Japan to join the Liberty Church Kyoto team and are very excited about the future.
They both feel passionately that children’s church is not simply a place to keep the children occupied while the adults worship. Instead, they believe that creating a space where children can learn about and experience God for themselves is simply one of most important works that any church can do. Creating such a space is their desire at Liberty Church Kyoto and they hope to have a lot of fun doing so!
Chris and Maiko have two sons, Daniel and Sion.

Drew and Eriko Miller (Pastor of Worship)
Drew was born and raised in Florida, and Eriko was born in Ohio and raised in both America and Japan.  God called Drew to Japan right after college in 2008 after several mission trips to Japan, and God called Eriko to Japan while playing the piano on a cruise ship in the Caribbean sea. They feel that worship is an intimate and strategically important aspect of Christianity, and they feel called to create a unique and special bilingual worship experience. They are passionate about writing and producing authentically Japanese Christian worship songs that will speak into the lives of the Japanese people and demonstrate to them the Love, Hope, and Freedom that can only be found in Christ. Prior to joining the Liberty Church Kyoto Team, Drew and Eriko were the worship leaders at a large church near Kobe, Japan. Drew and Eriko have a beautiful little daughter named Mika.

Why are we fund raising?
We are raising money so that we can focus all of our time and energy on doing the work of the church in reaching this city, as opposed to us working full time to support our families and just doing church part time. Mike and Seira sold everything including their successful English School in order to move into the heart of Kyoto and launch this church plant. Chris and Maiko and Drew and Eriko left the security of their homes and former secure positions in their ministries in order to follow God’s leading in coming to Kyoto. We have given our all to launch and maintain this work, and it has been exciting and rewarding! We see the incredible opportunity and potential that Kyoto holds for the Japanese nation as a whole, and also for the Middle East. Reaching the city of Kyoto is Key if we want to see a Great Awakening in the Japanese Nation, and we believe that the time has come and this nation is ripe! And we realize that reaching this nation at this time needs to be our priority, but we realize that we cannot do this work alone!

This city is too hard for us to reach by ourselves in our own strength; we need the body of Christ to stand up and support this work by partnering with us! We are fundraising to raise enough financial support for us as team for a period of the next three years. We believe that for us to take advantage of the opportunity before us at this critical juncture in history we need to be able to cast a larger net in terms of reaching out to the people of this city, and that can only happen if we are financially able to do so. Kyoto is the fifth most expensive city in the world to live in, but the Kingdom of God should not be hindered by dollar signs! God is preparing the hearts of the people of Japan, and we need the finances to take advantage of this time.

For Reference: The cost of living for a 3-4 person family in Kyoto is roughly $4000.00 a month (Being that Mike has a family of seven his needs run about $5000.00 a month)

Reaching the nation of Japan is a daunting task both in physical terms and financial terms, but if the entire Body of Christ stands up to the task, with everyone contributing something, this is not only possible it makes it doable. We are looking for all sizes of donations. Everything helps! Individual contributions, and corporate contributions from churches will help make this possible. If we could have 4,000 people donate a hundred dollars or more, we would able to reach this need. When the Body of Christ stands together to this task, the burden is made lighter. Please help us, so that we can in turn reach the nation of Japan for Christ!
Should we be able to raise the necessary finances, we will use those funds as our families financial support as we devote our energies to reaching out and into the city of Kyoto. We will do so through multiple methods such as church services, coffee shop ministries, “flash” evangelism, meals, homeless ministries, discipleship, multiplication through new church plants, teaming with other churches and missionaries in the city for outside efforts and encouragement, English classes and outreaches, etc. We also feel very strongly about the power of worship and we are looking to create powerfully original, authentic Japanese worship that will be recorded bilingually.

**Any additional funds raised over the amount needed will go to our next project of raising the necessary funding for purchasing a Japanese Style Ryokan(Japanese Inn) which we would like to renovate into a multi purpose facility and use to create a uniquely Japanese expression of the Church, while also having rooms available to house mission teams, recording studio’s, an international school, a homeless outreach center, etc. We are attempting to build a first century style church in a modern context.

***We are a campus and branch of Liberty Church in Pensacola, Florida, and we are answerable and accountable to them for all that we are doing and how we handle all finances that are donated to this work.
