Pursuing SC Teacher Certification

Donation protected
**UPDATE: We reached our goal! Thank you, everyone, for contributing. Any donations that exceed the $2000 will be used for any unforeseen expenses as well as child care so that I can study for my exams.**

My name is Natasha Akery and I want to be a public school teacher.

I am raising money to become an English Language Arts teacher for middle and high school grades in South Carolina.

Growing up, the teachers who nurtured me most were my English Language Arts teachers. They recognized my talent as a writer, and helped me learn to read critically, write persuasively, and express my emotions and beliefs.

In a society based on status updates limited to less than 200 characters and emoji-heavy communication, I want to help students take command of the written word. I want to teach them that mastery of the English language is the vehicle needed for success, influence, and change.

The money you donate will be used to pay for me to enroll in the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) program, application fees, and state licensure fees.

I plan to enroll in the ABCTE program in January 2017, and complete it within six months in hopes that I can begin teaching in the 2017-2018 school year.

It is estimated that 4,000 teachers retire each year, but only 2,000 new teachers graduate to replace them (see study ). For the 2016-2017 school year, there were almost 200 teaching position vacancies throughout South Carolina.

I do not assume that being a public school teacher will be easy, or even ideal. I am pursuing this career knowing that it is difficult, but also rewarding. I grew up watching my father serve as a special education teacher for over twenty years. I watched him develop strong bonds with his students and help them acquire essential life skills, whilst facing opposition for being a teacher who wanted to change the status quo.

I have never been interested in a career through which I can make a lot of money, but rather one that gives me the opportunity to help others. Becoming an English Language Arts teacher means so much to me because I remember what it's like to be a student who has so much to say and express, but lacks the necessary skills. Critical reading and effective communication through writing and speech should not be special talents afforded to some; they should be skills mastered by all.

I would be so grateful for your monetary support as well as verbal encouragement. Please take the time to show your appreication for the teachers in your lives and your children's lives. So often we take our public servants for granted, and do not realize not only what life would be like without them, but what their lives are like without us showing them our support.

Thank you.
