Restoring Dignity - Period.

Amherst College Women’s Sports teams (Women’s basketball, lacrosse, golf, volleyball, soccer, tennis, softball, field hockey, ice hockey, and track&field) are partnering with a local non-profit organization - Amherst Community Connections - to participate in their campaign: "Restoring Dignity for Homeless Women, Period."
Our fundraising aims to secure sanitary items, condoms, undergarments and housing help for homeless women in Amherst.
Firstly, for many women living on the streets or experiencing extremely low-incomes, condoms, menstrual-hygiene products like tampons, pads, panty liners, adult diapers and undergarments like bras, underwear or socks are not easily accessible - mainly because there is a lack of funds to purchase them and a lack of donations.
It seems like an obvious need for the average woman. However, women in shelters and on the streets are found without these types of female-specific essentials. The average woman spends $120 a year on menstrual products. Women who receive food stamps (SNAP benefits) cannot use them to purchase non-food items like hygiene products. There is also a lack of clean showers and facilities for these women to clean themselves during menstruation which can lead to infections. The lack of feminine products like tampons for women who are homeless and are with low incomes is a serious issue that doesn’t receive nearly enough attention. Because of this, many of these women often go without these products and are often found with mental, emotional and physical pain and discomfort. In addition, providing these women with condoms allows them agency over their sexual and reproductve health which they may not otherwise have the ability to afford.
Further, women living on the street suffer greater vulnerability and gender-specific threats to their safety. Housing in Amherst's private market is expensive, with the average cost for housing in an apartment with a shared kitchen and bathroom being around $600. On top of that, moving costs like last month's rent and security deposits can cost up to $1200 - a significant financial barrier to permanent housing. Our fundraising will provide women who are homeless or experiencing extremely low-incomes the funds to remove this barrier and help women who have found employment move into sustainable and safer housing. This support could make the difference between having access to housing or living on the street / staying in a shelter.
How would your donation translate into a difference for our community’s female homeless community?
$10 - one month supply of feminine hygiene products
$25 - one month supply of feminine hygiene products AND a new bra
$50 - three month supply of feminine products AND new bra AND pack of socks
$100 - six month supply of feminine hygiene products AND new bra AND 6-pack of socks AND 6-pack of underwear
$1000 - move in assistance - helping one woman off of the streets and into safe, shared housing in Amherst.
