10 months ago, I decided that I wanted to do something positive in the LGBTQ community. When I came out, the first thing I did was research places I could read about others who were dealing with the same fears. But there wasn't as many options for people like me, as I have come to realize. I started thinking if I can't find what I'm looking for, I need to create it.
I started writing and creating a website to share stories, tips, and observations of queer culture, travel, fashion, and art.
I started talking to other members of the LGBTQ community and found that I wasn't the only one who wanted to find a new resource and safe place online for everyone under the queer umbrella. I used all of my savings and credit to buy equipment, the website, moving back to New York, etc. Now, I am a bit stuck.
I have been planning a launch party for June 7th, 2019. I thought I could finance everything myself, but I left my job and took a part time job to keep afloat after moving and to have more time to create this site. I now just have enough to try to pay my bills and eat.
I have put quite a few grand into this, and I am not giving up. I know that this is something the community needs, and plan on giving back to the community after the launch. I would like to make Queerytraveler a nonprofit and to give a large portion of any profit acquired from the website to help LGBTQ homeless youth and young adults. But until then, I have to put my pride aside and ask for help to make that happen and to support the queer community that's already involved.
The money you provide will cover the venue, food and favors for the launch party as well as help pay for the website, the tee-shirts, business cards, advertising and pay the staff involved in the writing, modeling, and upkeep. One of the most important factors that I want to give attention to is that everyone involved is queer; models and writers included.
Since I have had to work, I have had less time to put into the movement. I have recently hired an assistant to make sure we get everything done before the launch, but I also need to make sure she is paid. I have learned that building a community cannot happen alone, and having her help is imperative to moving forward. Her experience will not only keep us on pace, but will help jump start us much faster, easier and cheaper than without her help.
This support would not only mean a lot to us, but would show us encouragement that we are on the right track. Doing this alone has been isolating and difficult, so it would also show me that it is as important as I know it is and worth every penny and hour.
My birthday is a week away. I don't want gifts or to ask you to give to a charity through facebook, but I'm asking you to support my dream and the many people it can/ has had a positive affect on.
If you are in a tight financial place, there's no judgement. Even a 4 quarters is another person telling us to keep going. And if you are one of the amazing people to give us a larger contribution, we will send you a personalized thank you and send you a tee/ the gifts you are helping us create.
Thank you so much for reading and taking action on something important. Thanks for your bravery and encouragement. You are awesome just for being here!
