Laurie Goes to Africa 2018

Donation protected
I live in Kisii, Kenya serving as a missionary for the Anglican Church of Kenya but I also have my hands in many other projects, including tutoring at a children’s home, making websites, working on becoming fluent in Swahili, studying international development and building relationships.

Poverty and suffering alleviation are passions of mine. Since my education is in Chemistry, I’m still learning a lot about how to go about doing this. Even the experts can’t agree on how to really end poverty or the best actions for development. But I’m in the field, with my nose in books, taking online classes, communing with locals and trying to understand it more.

Read about what I did in 2017 here: http://lauriegoestoafrica.com/2017-what-it-was-about/
And what my plan for 2018 is here: http://lauriegoestoafrica.com/2018-looking-ahead/

The money raised helps to sustain me here. Not only do the funds help me to continue to stay and work in Africa, I also use the money to support my projects, such as buying books, crayons and paper for the children's home, and assisting some locals, who come from very tough circumstances, with food, cash or small jobs. I strongly feel that I’m supposed to be here. Me and Africa’s connection is magical and there’s not much more I can say about that. This is where I’m supposed to be right now, no matter how hard it may be, (it’s hard!!! but also enjoyable.)

There’s no organization or boss that pays me. I scrape money together anyway I can and right now a lot of that is coming from amazing donors. I can also hook you up with a great website, (see Webwork for a Cause ) or awesome, beautiful African arts and crafts through my online shop (LGtA Shop ). I would love to someday get a job in international development or start my own non-profit. Right now I'm a freelance humanitarian and missionary finding my way.

I'm so grateful to everyone who donated in the past. I really, truly, could not have done what I've been doing. Helping mentor, encourage and help African (I've also worked in Liberia and Uganda in the past) adults and children unfortunately doesn't come with a nice, steady paycheck. But I'm so thankful that I have people who believe in what I'm doing and care not just about me but about the single women, struggling poor and orphaned and abandoned children that I help and love.
