Cranbrook Army Cadets Vimy Trip

Can you imagine what it would be like to stand at the Vimy memorial and take part in the 100th anniversary celebrations of the battle of Vimy Ridge? Or how it would feel to visit the  Ann Frank house in Amsterdam, the Golden Lane in Prague or the Auschwitz concentration camp? 1813 Royal Canadian Army Cadets in Cranbrook, BC have a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in the 100th anniversary celebrations of Vimy Ridge. They will walk the ridge  where 10,000 Canadian soldiers fought a battle that many historians consider to be one of Canada's defining moments in history. While in the Vimy region, they will take a guided tour of Wellington Quarry, an underground museum located in the many tunnels that were dug by the British army in World War I. This trip is a 15 day educational adventure that will allow the cadets to not only tour Vimy, but also Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Auschwitz, and Kraków. They will be able to visit the places they've only read about in school and return home with a true understanding of what happened all those years ago when the world was at war. After returning to their classrooms, they will be able to share their experiences with their classmates and hopefully bring some of Canada's historic events to life in a way that is more exciting than just reading through the text books. A trip of this magnitude is quite costly and we are asking for your support in raising the funds necessary to make this trip a reality for our youth. The projected cost of this trip is $110,000. Although this trip is in April 2017, there are financial deadlines that must be met within the next six months in order to take part in this adventure. Our first goal is $40,000. Without your support, this trip will not be possible. The army cadet program is a free program for youth aged 12 to 19. Many of the lessons within the program are geared towards community service, leadership training, and wilderness survival. This includes lessons in first aid, map and compass reading, and building shelters in the wilderness. Cadets also have the option of completing the Duke of Edinburgh program, which is a self-guided program that consists of fitness, community service, education, and adventure. Cadets can also earn high school credits through the cadet program and this year, one of our connects will be graduating a semester ahead of his classmates because of the additional credits he has received through the Army Cadet program. Once again, we are asking for your support in sending the cadets from 1813 RCACC on an incredible journey that will bring history to life.
