Liam's Testing-Goal Reached!
Donation protected
Our little Liam was diagnosed at 10 months old with profound sensorineural hearing loss. Although we were told that Liam's hearing loss was likely caused by genetics, we do not yet know which specific gene is responsible for it. Because hearing loss can be syndromic (meaning that it is caused by a syndrome that also has other health implications, i.e. Usher's Syndrome), genetic testing is important, but often costly. For this reason, we have chosen GoFundMe to help us raise the funds to pay for the OtoSCOPE test through the University of Iowa, a genetic test that has the capability to test for 134 genes known to cause non-syndromic hearing loss, as well as the most common types of syndromic hearing loss. Our hope is that this test will rule out syndromic hearing loss in Liam and give our family a peace of mind, or that it will give us the information necessary to prepare ourselves for the implications of a syndrome.
