Lift El Salvador

Donation protected
In 2017 Marquette University Powerlifting initiated a relationship with the people of El Salvador. Specifically, MU leads powerlifting classes and exercise programs as part of a women’s and youth empowerment initiative. El Salvador has the highest per capita homicide rate in the world, as a result of a cycle of gang violence and police repression. Domestic violence and sexual violence are also common across the country. Finally, obesity and diabetes have been on the rise, a result in part of the long-term effects of poverty, inequality and violence. The powerlifting program aims to help women and youth appreciate their own inner strength by testing their outer strength with iron, and also improve health and emotional well-being under such difficult conditions.

Unfortunately, young people of Romero community are currently using homemade concrete and rebar creations to get into shape. To create a stronger interest and long-term sustainability for safe strength training, we are trying to outfit the community with better lifting equipment.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated: monetary or physical from racks, bars, and plates, down to the most basic gym necessities (weight collars, chalk, bands, shoes, and belts). We are working with two non-profit organizations in El Salvador. One of them will help monitor the equipment after donation to ensure its safety and maintenance- your donations and assistance will be given the utmost care and respect in the hands of people that really need it.

Thank you for your kindness,
The Marquette University Powerlifting team
