On August 3rd, our beautiful island of Saipan, the capital of the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands was directly struck by Typhoon Soudelor, this year's most powerful storm. President Obama has declared the region a disaster area. While federal agencies and non-profit organizations are delivering much-needed aid to Saipan, one critical need will take much longer to address:
Restoring the island's electricity
NUMBERS:
400
Estimated number of utility poles knocked down by the typhoon.
50000
residents are without power. A small percentage of islanders have generators. However, this is not sustainable because only $50 of gasoline may be purchased per day per customer. Locals have waited for as long as 10 hours to buy gasoline.
6-12 months
before power is fully restored to the island, leaving hundreds of families in darkness for months to come.
Because of Saipan's remote location in the Pacific, it will take weeks to months for new utility poles, transformers, and generators to arrive on Saipan. In addition, there are not enough certified electricians to rebuild the power infrastructure.
Current efforts to restore electricity are prioritized on the hospital and essential government buildings.
