LOaVEs for the holidays

Donativo protegido
Hi friends, family, and everyone reading! My name is Rachel Chew, and with the help of my incredible best friend Rachel Leung (yes, we are both Rachel’s!), we will be baking and taking orders for holiday-inspired banana bread for Barb’s Home of Angels in Jinja, Uganda this holiday season! Sharing this vision I had while tossing and turning in bed is the easy part, and we can’t execute this idea without all of you, your kind hearts, and your love for banana bread! The hard part now is on all of you and that’s why we need your help and support to bring this project to life!

What is the cause?

Jaaja Barb’s Home of Angels is a non-profit organization partnering with the Kuwasha International Development Society in Canada and is a registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Jinja, Uganda, East Africa.  Certificate of registration is No. 13158, issued by the National Board of Non-Governmental Organizations, Kampala, Uganda.

Established 9 years ago by Barb Giraud residing in Canada and Edwin Lufafa, in Jinja, Uganda.  Barb and Edwin have built this home solely to house orphans who are in desperate need.  These vulnerable children are alone, some living with HIV/AIDS and in acute poverty.  It is their intention to house, educate and protect them.

How does this fundraiser work?

This all began in Barb's own kitchen baking banana bread every morning for her friends and neighbours, so we'll be doing the same with your help!

For this specific fundraiser, Rachel and I will be baking and taking orders for our holiday-inspired loaves to raise money for the cause.  We run a plant-based recipe blog together since 2014. Our selection of loaves available are:

1.) Classic Banana Bread
2.) Salted Chocolate Rosemary Loaf
3.) Gingerbread Loaf
4.) Chocolate-Orange Loaf

All our loaves are banana-based, which means that they are low in fats and refined-sugars without sacrificing taste! Since our flavour variations mask the banana flavour, we thought that we should just call them as "loaves" instead of banana bread (aside from the classic loaf).

All of the loaves are also vegan friendly (but not nut-free since we use almond milk), but if you have other dietary restrictions and would still love to order, please do not hesitate to inquire and contact us through the envelop button next to my name on this GoFundMe page.

We are asking a minimum donation of $12 per 9×5 inch (large) loaf.

What are the specific steps I need to take if I want to make an order?
*If you do not wish to receive a loaf for your donation, you can simply donate and disregard the following steps. You are greatly appreciated!*

1.) Make a non-anonymous (full name) donation through our GoFundMe page so we can thank you in person!

2.) Fill out this Google Form

3.) Keep an eye out in your inbox for pick-up information and reminders! (allow 7 days prior to pick-up)

Can I order if I reside outside of Vancouver?

Unfortunately, our loaves are made to order from our own kitchen and we are limited to our geographic location of Vancouver, BC. There will be several pick-up locations in and around the Vancouver and Tri-Cities area and our Google Form will direct you to further information. However, we would still love your support and your help to spread the word even if we are unable to give you a loaf in-person for your generosity.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Where will the funds go? How will the donations help?

100% of your donation to purchase a loaf of banana bread will be directly given to Barb to support her cause(*see note below). Since this is not a government-funded charity nor are there staff members, 100% of the money given to Barb is directly put toward her cause.

Specifically, The greatest challenge Barb and Edwin are currently facing is the issue of operating funds. They have recently adopted 20 sick children aged 3-5, who were abandoned from a nearby orphanage. These children are currently separated from the Home of Angels, and are being taken care of outside the orphanage. This money will ensure that they will be provided the care they need before they are able to join the other children in the Home, as well as to help build desks, chairs, whiteboards, etc. for four classrooms that are being built so everyone at the Home will be able to receive education. Barb is currently working on gathering school supplies for this project!

*Because GoFundMe requires us to pay a fee to use their site, here is an equation of where your donations will be going:
(Assuming $12 per loaf)
GoFundMe fee = 7.9% + $0.30 per donation
Proceeds to Barb = $12×(92.1%)-$0.30 = $10.75

Are you working directly with the Home of Angels? How are you affiliated with the cause?

I first heard about Barb through my philanthropy teacher in high school who had watched Barb’s segment on Global TV back in 2011. Since 2012, I have been in contact with Barb, and have begun raising money for the Home of Angels with some friends through high school events. Since graduation in 2014, I’ve been searching for an outlet to continue this incredible project and to share it with our friends, family, and community.

How long will this fundraiser go for?

This specific fundraiser (with holiday-inspired loaves) will be ongoing beginning November 10th through the holiday season. Loaf order form closes on December 22nd but general donations will continue to be accepted into the new year.

Because this is an ongoing initiative, Rachel and I are always brainstorming for what to do next. The end of this fundraiser simply means the beginning of another project; there’s always something we can do to help. I believe that if we can’t be there physically to help those in need, we can do our part to fund people like Barb who works directly with the children and watch the most heartwarming differences being made before our eyes.

What's in it for you?

As the holidays are approaching, meeting deadlines, holiday shopping, flying out to see family and friends, all while trying to keep up with day-to-day tasks make the holidays seem a little daunting, but we shouldn't forget the true meaning of this time of year. I think that this is a great incentive for everyone to do a little good (while receiving a little good as well) this holiday season! These loaves make beautifully delicious gifts that capture the true meaning of giving; they are gifts that keep on giving!

Here are some photos of the children and the orphanage below. If you'd like to read more about the Home of Angels, follow Barb's blog here: http://jaajabarbshomeofangels.blogspot.ca/

Thank you so much to everyone taking the time to read this story, and just remember that nothing would be possible without your help and kind hearts. We hope that you can stand by us and help us spread the word about this initiative. Loaf by loaf, we can make a really beautiful & astounding difference to these kids' lives! Enjoy your loaves!
