Hey, hey y’all! I am excited to present my photography series entitled We Matter: Looking Inside Ourselves.
I wish to display this specific series because as I grow older I continue to realize the various realms where race/ethnicity matters. For those of us who are black/brown, the color of our skin, the texture of our hair, the accents we speak with, rather than being praised, often work to our disadvantage. And it isn’t just grown folks facing these adversities; the youth are not exempt.
Knowing your worth is so important. How you see yourself not only determines your demeanor, but how others will treat you. But how can you be confident and commanding in a world that seems to hate you? This series was inspired by the seemingly never ending assault upon black and brown bodies in America, whether overt and covert. Intended to impress upon viewers that we matter, the project features black/brown teenagers defying destructive stereotypes.
A multi-faceted multi-media project, every part has a purpose. The portraits are meant to showcase the ways in which we can be engaged within a group, yet still be an individual. Each image has a model in a black top upon the same yellow backdrop, representing their participation in a collective. Yet each model exudes a different aura through their facial expressions and posture, representing their individuality. I will then conduct a second part, all female, which will be a surprise.
I am asking for your help in making the We Matter: Looking Inside Ourselves one-night exhibition a reality. I’d like to present my series in mid-April 2017 at the Studio at Billings Forge. I chose this space for the intimacy it provides. I also love how the gallery is a platform for me to present more than one type of medium.
Your donations will cover photo printing fees, matting fees and other supplemental materials to enhance the viewing experience.
I’d like to say thank you in advance! Being able to do this exhibition means so much to me. Number one being that as a black female artist, it is important that my work be a response and hopefully an answer to some of the issues I see in the world. The second reason being this exhibit lets me share my own talent with others, rather than hoard it. The third reason it means so much is because it’d really jumpstart my career in photography and journalism.
Sow a seed into this exhibit and help ya girl out! Thank you again!
