Hello and thank you for visiting Love City Strong's gofundme page.
Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria were powerful storms that did tremendous damage throughout the Caribbean before hitting the continental U.S.
On the island of St. John, USVI, the impact was devastating to our infrastructure and to the spirit of our residents. With a limited amount of resources, and the majority of the island directly affected by the storms, it became clear that our local community needed to take action.
Our grassroots organization, Love City Strong, came together in the direct aftermath of this crisis to mobiize volunteers within the community. Our goal became clear: Recover and rebuild the island better than ever, and get the local community a seat at the table with official agencies.
Many people on the island have lost their homes, places of employment, and livelihoods. Week to week Love City Strong works hand in hand with NGOs and federal agencies such as FEMA, the Red Cross, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Global DIRT to meet the immediate needs of the community. We are official partners of the St. John Community Foundation, St. John Rescue, and Kenny Chesney's Love for Love City Foundation.
A few of the recovery projects we have completed include:
+ Coordinating with generous partners on our sister islands of Puerto Rico and St. Croix to evacuate approx. 1,200 residents and tourists.
+ Organizing supply runs of private donations from PR and STX, to be directly distributed to residents of St. John. These runs were critical in the days following Irma and before Maria.
+ Providing support for NGOs and federal agencies with our local knowledge and ties to the community, ensuring that they understand the island's unique history and needs.
+ Creating an information source for locals and our friends and family Stateside in the form of daily community meetings and a community bulletin, to provide factual and timely updates on federal assistance programs, other on-island resources, and the overall state of the community.
+ Hiring locals for recovery projects run by Global DIRT and Kenny Chesney's Love For Love City.
+ Coordinating multiple volunteer projects within the community using local resident volunteers, including site clean ups and supply distributions.
+ Setting up a clothing distribution "store" that island residents can visit daily to receive free, donated clothing items for all ages.
UPDATE!
Your generous contributions have made these and other projects on St. John possible. We have reached our initial goal of $10k, which has allowed us to execute these initial projects and to help set us up financially so that we may continue our efforts in the months ahead.
We need your help to fund more community projects for our island! Our goal has been increased to 50k. We'll continue to keep you informed regarding our projects, and the state of the island as we move further in the recovery process.
