Love for Coach Lemley

Love for Lemley - We wanted to give a special thanks to the CHHS Longhorn family and to Melanie Hitchcock for creating this page. Here is Coach Lemley's story....
I have known Steve Lemley for 13 years and if I think of one word to describe Coach Lemley it would be LOUD!! He has a big voice and he loves to use it!! I am sure most people who know Lemley would agree. Coach Lemley is very passionate about his coaching and teaching. He has coached for 16 years and has been a part of our Cedar Hill Longhorn family for the last 13 years. He is our defensive coordinator and is loved by his kids. He is often wearing his very serious, very stern coach face. He loves his job and loves the kids he teaches and coaches! But what you may not know about Coach Lemley is that he is the first person to drop everything and help someone in need. He is the best friend to have when you need someone to listen or to laugh with. He is just a wonderful man who I admire so much! One of the things I love the most about him is that he is the BEST dad. He has primary custody of his kids so when you see Lemley, you know that Ethan, 14, and Brynne, 11, are not far behind. He loves doing stuff with them and if he is not working, he is taking them somewhere fun to just spend time together. He also has a 21 year old son, Cody.
Steve is a very private person and I am sure at the writing of this that many people do not know his story. In fact, I had trouble getting some dates out of him because he doesn’t want any attention or fuss on him. In June, Steve lost his voice but didn’t think much of it because, remember, he is very LOUD and losing his voice was not uncommon. His voice did not come back and after a week he went to the doctor thinking there may be something wrong. At the end of June he had his first visit and just tried medication to get rid of the mucus growth on his vocal chords. After two weeks the growth had grown. They tried more medications and breathing treatments, but after his third appointment and another two weeks they found the growth was worse and had now spread to both vocal chords. On August 4th he had surgery to scape his vocal chords and what was thought to be mucus build up was cancerous tissue. They did a laser biopsy to take out the cancerous tissue.
Two weeks after the surgery the check-up showed a new spot had already developed. Doctors wanted to immediately take an aggressive plan of action and start radiation. His first scheduled radiation treatment was to take place on October 2nd. On September 30th (just two days before radiation), he received a call from his oncologist recommending that they hold off on radiation. They had found two large bulbs that had developed on his vocal chords. On October 13th Steve went for his second biopsy surgery which confirmed that the new growth and bulbs were cancerous. The doctor used a laser to cut out the bulb and take out the first layer of tissue on his vocal chords. We are prayerful that the doctor got all the cancerous tissue removed and will hopefully get confirmation on November 9th. If the growth is back then radiation will begin. Now remember that big voice that I told you about that Lemley loves to use??? Well, it hasn’t come back. When I see him in the field house or on the field after our games, it just hurts my heart because I know he would love to be celebrating and yelling like the rest of them.
Although Steve has health insurance, the medical bills are piling up and our goal is to lift a little burden off him. Although Steve would never ask for anything, we wanted to set up a GoFundMe page so everyone could show their love and support of a well deserving coach, teacher and dad! If you cannot give a monetary donation, we would love for you to just leave a comment that we can share with him. Also, as he goes through this difficult time we ask that you continue to pray for him. I know his main goal is to get healthy so he can use that big voice again!!
Head Football coach at Cedar Hill Joey McGuire commented, “Lemley is the hardest working guy I have ever been around and the best dad I know.”
Gina Farmer – Executive Director of Athletics at Cedar Hill states, “Coach Lemley is not only an outstanding coach but also an incredible teacher. He is a valuable member of our Longhorn family and I hope everyone that hears his story finds it in their heart to help this incredible man through donation or prayer.”
Coach Lemley, this is for you because we know that if we were the ones in need, you would be one of the first to offer a hand to help in any way.
