Lumumba Zapata Soccer Squad Jerseys

Hi everyone, my name is Nicholas Taylor and I will be the captain of my very own soccer team that will be competing in UC San Diego's intramural league this Winter quarter. I believe that being an unrepresented student at UC San Diego comes with various challenges that go far beyond academics. One in particular is the feeling that you do not belong; thus I, along with friends whom I've met on my collegiate journey, decided to create a soccer team that gives us a break from school and more importantly, affords us a space to express our ethic prides, struggles, and isolation while studying at a predominantly white institution. We decided to name our team the Lumumba Zapata Soccer Squad. Lumumba Zapata was the proposed name for the third college at UC San Diego and it represents the importance of acknowledging and respecting Black and Latino culture. Furthermore, it embodies the demand for a more inclusive campus for students of color at institutions worldwide. We will be one of the first soccer teams that will consist of only students of color playing at UC San Diego. We will utilize the donations that we receive to purchase team uniforms that further indicate the unity we wish to achieve. This soccer team symbolizes far more than just a competitive outlet; it symbolizes respect, togetherness, and the demand for excellence for all students of color. We gladly appreciate all donations but we kindly ask that they are submitted by December 21st, as our season will begin in January.
