Greetings!

I am Stephanie Durr from the soulful city of Detroit, Michigan. I am 21 years young and currently a junior at Kentucky State University where I major in Public Administration. I have earned and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.23 (and rising!) This letter is to share with you my aspirations of becoming Miss Kentucky State University. The position of Miss KSU not only speaks to my devotion and pride to my university, but will also give me the platform to continue to evoke the necessary social and attitudinal changes on my campus.

I entered Kentucky State University in the summer of 2012 through the Academics with Attitude (AWA) Program. This program really helped bridge the gap and calm any fears that I had coming into college. I can honestly say sacrificing my last summer in Detroit with friends and loved ones was really worth it because I gained so much from the program. When fall semester started I knew that I wanted to come in working! I became my freshman class vice president and started participating in various community service projects, being an active voice within my student government, and putting on events with my freshman class. I enjoyed my role so much. Being able to impact a mass amount of students as a freshman was elating. I gained so much from it that I decided I needed to dive deeper into my leadership capabilities.

During my second semester as a sophomore, I ran an election for the secretary position on the executive board of the student government association (SGA). I was nervous, as the stakes were higher than they were in the past. I was not fully financially prepared, but I had to go for it. I was more than ecstatic when the results were read and I won. I am currently the executive secretary of SGA. So far this year, I have played a major part in orchestrating very successful events, sat on various administrative committees, and I have always been a positive role model on campus. During my tenure as secretary, I have been very adamant about being the liaison between the student government and the students. I control SGA’s twitter page (@KYSU_SGA) where I update students on the various activities and breaking news on campus. I have also started another social media page for SGA for the convenience of the students. We are only half way through the school year, but I have plans to continue to uplift and positively impact my campus.

In order to run for Miss KSU, I have to participate in “campaign week.” During this week, which is March 30th – April 4th 2015, I plan to incorporate the use of flyers, t-shirts, buttons, pins, candy, banners and other tangibles to reach out to the students. There will be a parade, a debate and I will have to participate in a pageant for the student body.  I know that I possess all the potential it takes to win the title of Miss KSU. Not only do I feel I am a deserving candidate, but I also feel I am the best candidate that can carry out the duties and responsibilities of Miss KSU. This is not just a title for me, but for all of the student body. I have grown to love and appreciate this university more than I could have imagined. I believe I ended up at Kentucky State University for a reason, and I am eager and willing to be the change I wish to see. With my platform, “Think Big, bigger service, bigger impact, bigger success” I will strive to encourage my student body and show proof that the sky is the limit. I know I have the voice, tenacity, character and furthermore, I am a leader.  In order to run the best possible campaign, I am asking for your assistance. I estimate at least $1,500 to be able to bring this dream to life. This is one of the biggest things I can accomplish outside of graduating in 2016 with my bachelor’s degree. I will need both moral and financial support to be successful. If you will like to contribute it will be greatly appreciated. Please know that no contribution is a small contribution.
