Project Lifeline
The Ask:
Your donation shines a light on the inhumane conditions of the detention centers where immigrant children are held. Your contribution will support our public witness event "Bear Witness and Deliver Aid to Children Detained by Immigration" through the purchase of relief supplies including with bottled water (no sparkling or flavored), easy open and individual sized fruit, peanut butter, veggies, protein snacks, cereals, crackers, natural juices, bags of dry rice, canned beans/soup, blankets.*
The Crisis:
134,000 children are arrested and detained annually.
These children tell us the facts of detention at Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facilities--the first points of incarceration for those fleeing the escalating urban violence in Central America.
“It was painful how hungry we were.”
“I begged for water for my daughter but the officials wouldn’t give her any.”
“We had to drink water from the toilet.”
“The temperature was extremely cold. Children were crying at all times. A lot of children including mine were shivering. Human heat was not enough to warm the babies.”
The systematic deprivation of food, water, basic medical care, and exposure to extreme cold and unsanitary conditions violates the human rights of these children.
These conditions also violate U.S. law, international treaties and our conscience.
Zero tolerance and the elimination of some hard-fought bases for asylum claims will maintain the number of people incarcerated.
Join us: people of good conscience, physicians, and faith leaders will caravan on two routes--from Houston and from San Antonio to the Ursula detention center in McAllen, Texas on Saturday, September 29, 2018 in order to deliver relief supplies, basic medical care, and the powerful message that the lives and health of detained children matter.
If the detention center refuses our aid, donations will be given to local relief organizations. This public event will help us apply pressure on the U.S. government to honor its legal and moral responsibility to treat children humanely.
After this event, Project Lifeline will continue to work on behalf of detained immigrant children.
