March 8, 2019, Days before Cyclone Idai made landfall, Malawi’s government declared a state of disaster after extremely heavy rainfall caused rivers to break their banks, leaving villages underwater, and in some areas knocked out power and water supplies. Malawi was struck with more heavy rains especially in lower Shire River districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje, in Malawi’s far south, was compounded by further rains from Cyclone Idai. The rain has caused severe flooding in 15 districts. Official reports have confirmed that 443,136 Children under the age of 18 have been affected, approximately 85 deaths, 87,000 displaced people and an astounding 868,895 people have been affected (UNICEF Malawi Flood Situation report 2. 22 March 2019).
The floods have also heavily impacted the ability for communities to sustain themselves. It has damaged crops, livestock, and infrastructure. This has put a strain on the public health system and accessibility to potable water. Weather induced blackouts are now more frequent causing larger effects on the country’s economy due to people being unable to conduct business. Banks and shops have closed placing a strain on the recovery efforts and the private sector’s ability to assist. To make matters worse, the country is expecting to continue to receive normal to above normal rainfall during its rainy season.
