My name is Mara Schmidt. Help me to fulfill my passion of becoming a World Class Professional Tennis Player. I knew that I loved tennis when I first picked up a tennis racquet. At age 12 I moved from California to Florida to train full time at the IMG Bollitieri Tennis Academy in the footsteps of players like Serena Williams. As a junior I ranked in the top 50 nationally and won my first main draw Pro match. I was excited to join the Purdue Boilermakers women’s tennis team (Go Boilers!) and played #1 doubles and singles. Our team was the first Purdue women’s tennis team to ever win the Big 10 championship beating three top twenty teams along the way. Throughout my career at Purdue we made the NCAA team playoffs 3 times and had a first round win over favored South Carolina.
Upon graduation, I was ready to make the jump to the women’s pro tour, but I was side tracked helping to take care of my sister who developed an intractable seizure disorder. She’s a fighter like me but the stress of unpredictable seizures has been tough on her and her medications have taken a toll on her. We are still searching for a cure for her. Through it all she is resilient, continues to smile, encourage others and perseveres through her struggle against epilepsy. She is my best friend and my inspiration!
 I spent a year working as a teaching pro at the Oaks Club in Osprey, but after visiting with my roommate and best friend from my Bollitieri days, Heather Watson, at the US OPEN, I was inspired to do what I love the most – play on the WTA women’s tour. I quickly racked up some wins and finished last year ranked 730 in singles and 582 in doubles. But Americans tennis players have a tough time financing their tour expenses. Unlike many foreign players who are sponsored by their governments or tennis associations, we Americans have to pay our travel and entry fees. This is one reason that so few American women make it into the higher levels of tennis.
