March for Our Lives Winton-Salem
Donation protected
March for Our Lives is the national teen-led movement to inspire people to take action to end gun violence in our schools and communities. Demonstrations across the country are being led by students from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students were fatally shot, and many others wounded, on Valentine’s Day. As a freshman at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, I am proud to be one of the organizers of the Winston-Salem March for Our Lives event this Saturday, March 24th.
I am also spearheading a post-March event, Awaken, at Wake Forest on Sunday, March 25th from 4:00 to 5:30 in Wait Chapel. Awaken is a call-to-action which will begin with a short remembrance service to honor the lives lost in mass-shootings, followed by a discussion about gun violence that includes why we need stricter gun control laws, what those laws should be, and ways we can convince our legislators to implement them. We have wonderful speakers (see our panelists at www.marchWS.org/panel-discussion/), who are donating their time. We plan to encourage attendees to register to vote by providing voter registration tables, and have arranged a special portal on our website which will allow North Carolina residents to write to their congressional representatives.
Creating events like these, which are free and open to the public, requires funding; which is why I’m doing this Go-Fund-Me. Any support you can lend would be greatly appreciated. Donations will be used for printing posters and programs, audio-visual equipment, water and snacks for our volunteers, web development fees, getting voter registration booths at both events, as well as shuttle transportation costs to make it easy for my fellow students at Wake Forest University to attend the rally.
I chose to get involved in this movement because I have friends who attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; friends who lost loved ones. My loved ones are suffering, and my heart aches for those in the Parkland community who are grieving after this terrible incident. After Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Pulse, Americans rallied together to demand change, yet nothing happened. This time is different, though. I believe that teenagers like me can help lead the way to lasting change. Thank you in advance for your support; your donation will be a great help as we work towards building a safer future for everyone.
