Mariachi/Rent Strike Support Fund
Donation protected
Could you pay $800 more per month in your rent? Well neither can tenants and Mariachis in Boyle Heights. Back in January of 2017, BJ Turner, of Dunleer Group, and Steve Goodman, purchased a 25 unit building in Boyle Heights. The tenants and mariachis from this building live one block away from Mariachi Plaza. Getting a job is dependent on the mariachis living close to their work. If they get displaced from their homes because the rent is too high, they also lose their opportunity for work. The Mariachis and other tenants organized and are fighting back!
In July, tenants in the building who had not yet received the rent increase, began a rent strike in solidarity with their fellow neighbors. After months of multiple requests and public pressure, BJ Turner finally met for the first time with the tenants last week. How did it go? Well the very next day, the attorneys for BJ Turner filed papers in court requesting trial dates against the mariachis! Support the mariachis in their fight to stay in their homes. Donate to their fund to support the rent strikers and their legal costs!
