Marine Debris Cleanup on Cat Island
Donation protected
Third trip since this fundraiser was started will be March 28- April 6, 2018.
Some of the expenses this fundraiser helps with includes gas to the beaches (about $4/gallon), trash bags, and clippers.
This fundraiser was started to support cleanup and education efforts in December 2017 on Cat Island in the Bahamas. After visiting for the first time in April 2016 it became overwhelmingly apparent how dire the need is for not only cleanup but marine debris awareness in general. Yes, some of what is found either discarded or washed up is deliberate litter due to poor trash and recycling programs (they burn their trash on the island), but a lot also washes up from items lost or cut free from boats. This debris poses a huge hazard not only for marine wildlife, but our earth as a whole.
I visited again, solo, for 10 days in December 2016 and removed (6) 30 gallon bags of small debris, and over 200lbs of rope that will be upcycled into marine debris awareness items by myself and our friends Planet Love Life.
In April 2017 I did another trip and did a huge family cleanup. After the trip I sent more netting to Planet Love Life for Marine debris awareness bracelets, and float rope toys for WashAshore Store!
During my time on Cat Island I will be chronicling my cleanup efforts in hopes of generating more awareness and passion for cleaning up our oceans and beaches. See updates after the trip here, Instagram, SnapChat, Facebook and YouTube @WashAshoreStore
