More than a Dream/Mas que un Sueño

Hello, this campaign is designed to help a young 27-year-old Dominican bass player who has inspired many and has a goal that is more than a dream for him and his family, friends, classmates and his community. His name is José Abner Cabrera and he has the dream of completing the funds to go to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (Massachusetts), where he has a partial scholarship of 60% of his total enrollment, not including his life expenses (accommodation, transportation, food, etc.)

Abner comes from a Christian family, humble but hardworking, and although he began to study music academically (at age 16) he quickly stood out for the grace, talent and desire to excel that characterizes it. He began his studies at ESCUELA MINISTERIAL DE MUSICOS ADORADORES JUDA, where after completing his studies with academic excellence, he joined the faculty where he was able to share his knowledge with children, youth and adults. Then in 2012 he entered to the National Conservatory of Music of the Dominican Republic where he was selected in his entrance exams to obtain the highest marks and validate several semesters of his main Instrument (Electric Bass). In their second year at the conservatory they accept him to participate in the Berklee program in Santo Domingo 2014 of a group of more than 500 applicants, this program is part of the agenda of international programs of Berklee College of Music. For 2015 he was also selected to participate in the program, but he was also given the opportunity to audition for a scholarship to Boston and pursue a career, for the audition he was awarded with $ 25,000 USD partial scholarship. Parallel to this, Abner finished his thesis in Systems Engineering at the O & M University with a score of 98 and was integrated into several of the advanced ensembles of the National Conservatory as the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble led by the Guitarist and Educator Javier Vargas (Berklee graduate), the Neo Jazz Ensemble led by the teacher (also graduated from Berklee) Mayreni Morel and the Big Band Orchestra of the Conservatory, all this without neglecting his work and passion for service in the different ministries of the church . Since then Abner has auditioned on different occasions and although he has increased his scholarship has not been able to complete de tuition, and because he has not received the support expected by the governmental institutions of his country, we have been motivated and make this campaign to make this dream a reality, dream which has converted in something “More than a Dream”, for the heart's desire of this young man who wants to return with teaching and social aid projects, the knowledge that he has to acquire in this prestigious university, in addition to his desire to make good music that positively impacts society. Abner will lose his scholarship in January 2018 if he cannot attend to the Spring 2018 semester.


We have seen Abner grow throughout this process because of his dedication, humility and hard work but above all because of his heart given to God and to others. He has had the opportunity to play with national and international artists such as Maridalia Hernández, Sandy Gabriel, the German trio of Cri-Cri Jazz Jazz, Pavel Polanco Safadit, also he has participated in the Jazz Festival of the Dominican Republic in 2016 and 2017 under the direction of figures such as Dr. Sócrates García and the Javier Vargas group (ATRE), among other important collaborations with different groups and people of his country, besides standing out for his jazz compositions.

We believe it is worth investing and helping someone who not only dreams, but makes their dreams into reality. Hola, esta campaña está diseñada para ayudar a un joven músico Bajista, Dominicano de 27 años que ha inspirado a muchos y  tiene una meta que es más que sueño para él y para su familia, amigos, compañeros de estudio y su comunidad. Su nombre es José Abner Cabrera y tiene el sueño de completar los fondos para ir a estudiar a la universidad Berklee College of Music en Boston (Massachusetts), donde actualmente tiene una Beca parcial de un 60% del total de su matrícula, sin incluir sus gastos de vida (alojamiento, transporte, comida, etc)

Abner viene de una familia cristiana, humilde pero trabajadora, y a pesar de que empezó a estudiar música de forma académica (a los 16 años) rápidamente se destacó por la gracia, el talento y deseo de superación que le caracteriza. Inició sus estudios en la Escuela Ministerial de Músicos Adoradores Judá, donde luego de concluir sus estudios con excelencia académica, se unió al cuerpo de profesores donde pudo compartir sus conocimientos, con niños, jóvenes y adultos. Luego ingresa al Conservatorio Nacional de Música de Republica Dominicana en el 2012 donde rápidamente se destaca en sus exámenes de admisión por obtener una de las notas más altas y convalidar varios semestres de su Instrumento principal (Bajo Eléctrico). En su segundo año en el conservatorio lo aceptan para participar en el programa Berklee en Santo Domingo 2014 de un grupo de más de 500 aplicantes, dicho programa es parte de la agenda de programas internacionales de Berklee College of Music. Para 2015 también es seleccionado para participar en el programa, pero además se le da la oportunidad de audicionar para una beca de estudios para ir a Boston y cursar una carrera, audición mediante la cual se le otorga una beca de $25,000 USD de beca parcial. Paralelo a esto Abner terminaba su tesis de grado de Ingeniería de sistemas en la universidad O&M con una puntuación de 98 y se integraba a varios de los ensambles avanzados del conservatorio nacional como el Ensamble de Jazz Contemporáneo dirigido por el Guitarrista y Educador Javier Vargas (egresado de Berklee),el Ensamble de Neo Jazz dirigido por la profesora y también egresada de Berklee Mayreni Morel y la Orquesta Big Band del Conservatorio, todo esto sin dejar de lado su trabajo y pasión de servicio en los diferentes ministerios de la iglesia. Desde entonces Abner ha audicionado en diferentes ocasiones y aunque ha logrado aumentar su beca no ha podido completarla y tras no recibir el apoyo esperado por las instituciones gubernamentales de su país, nos hemos sentido motivados a levantar esta campaña para hacer realidad esta meta que ya se ha convertido en más que un sueño por el deseo del corazón de este joven que quiere devolver con proyectos de enseñanza y ayuda social, los conocimientos que ha de adquirir en esta prestigiosa universidad, además de su deseo de hacer buena música que impacte de manera positiva la sociedad. Abner perderá su beca si no puede ingresar a la universidad en el cuatrimestre de Enero - Abril 2018.

Hemos visto a Abner crecer en todo este proceso por su entrega, humildad y trabajo duro pero sobre todo por su corazón entregado a Dios y a los demás. Ha tenido la oportunidad de tocar con artistas nacionales e internacionales como Maridalia Hernández, Sandy Gabriel, el trio alemán de Jazz Cri-Cri Jazz, Pavel Polanco Safadit, ha participado en el Dominican Republic Jazz fest del 2016 y 2017 bajo la dirección de figuras como el Dr. Socrates Garcia y el grupo de Javier Vargas (ATRE), entre otras colaboraciones importantes con diferentes grupos y personas de su país, además de destacarse por sus composiciones de jazz.

Creemos que vale la pena invertir y ayudar a aquellos que no solo sueñan, sino que convierten sus sueños en realidad.
