Donation protected
We are raising funds to help Maureen Schaffer to participate in a medical trial, she will be traveling from Los Angeles to South Carolina multiple times over the next couple of years.
Background: Maureen Schaffer was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) in October 2012. After a 6-hour neck dissection surgery she lost lip motor function, many salivary glands and taste buds on the right side of her tongue. She then underwent 30 radiation treatments to her neck leaving her with a swallowing disorder and lockjaw. ACC is chemo therapy resistant.
In 2016 the cancer spread to her lungs and she underwent a lobectomy on her right lung losing over half of it as well as a wedge dissection on her left lung. In the summer of 2018 more tumors appeared in the remaining lungs and on the sac around the lungs (pleura). She was told there was no other standard treatment available to combat the cancer.
A stage two clinical trial for rare cancer tumors opened for Maureen which shows great promise in fighting ACC. The study takes place in Greenville, South Carolina. She will travel every 28 days the first year to receive immunotherapy medication intravenously.
Although the medication itself is covered by the trial, a percentage of the costs of medical tests, labs, scans and procedures are her financial responsibility. Airfare, ground transportation, lodging and meals are needed as well.
We have estimated need based on the first year of the medical treatment.
Let’s pull our resources together to make this venture the least draining on her and her family as possible.
*John and Maureen are going on a cruise in January they scheduled before she was offered this trial. This cruise was already paid in full before the Gofundme account was established.*
**If she cannot continue the trial for any reason or the total amount donated exceeds costs, the funds will be hers to use as she wishes.**
