MDI Safe Streets
Donation protected
This time of year, our neighborhood streets become increasingly unsafe for our children due to speeding drivers from out of the area.
Whether they happen to be going on a walk, playing four square, or just hanging out with friends, their lives should not be endangered because of unaware drivers who often drive well beyond the posted speed limits.
We have tried many things, including having the local police post their electronic sign, which worked, but could only stay a week. Yelling at cars seems to work somewhat, but truthfully we can’t be out there ALL the time. And yelling also can encourage hostile confrontations, which we’d really rather avoid.
By far, my most successful attempt at slowing down cars was a sign that I made out of cardboard that said “Slow Down! Don’t KILL Our Kids!” It was probably the word KILL in big red lettering that got the attention of the drivers, but it got their attention and traffic speed slowed down considerably (some people even stopped to take photos!), not to mention the Ellsworth American requested a photo of the sign to use in their paper.
Speeding isn’t just a problem in my neighborhood. As I talk about it with other parents, I find that it’s a fairly universal problem on MDI.
Village Health & Wellness has already raised $400 and purchased 20 lawn signs.....we are extending the campaign to raise another $750 to purchase 40 more signs.
The cost is approximately $750 including shipping.
Our plan is to get 40 MORE lawn signs (as pictured) made and distributed to individuals who contact me asking for one for their road. AND we will continue to run this campaign as long as community members request signs!
You do NOT have to donate to request a sign, nor do you need to request a sign in order to donate. This is a community collaboration.
Please consider donating to help keep our streets safer for our kids.
(Village Health & Wellness is an organization made up of a network of local health and wellness providers. This campaign is an extension of our efforts to create healthy, vibrant communities, by making our roads safer, thus helping to insure the health and wellness of our children.)
Thank you,
