Memorial for the 66 WNY Submariners lost in WWII
The Buffalo Base of the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI), John Radens, Treasurer, is raising money to fund a memorial plaque to the 66 Western New York Submariners lost and on Eternal Patrol during WWII. There are no grave stones or markers for these men, their sacrifice gone unseen in the depths of the sea. USS Grenadier Memorial adjacent to the USS Croaker at the Buffalo Naval and Military Park has a plaque to the 52 Submarines lost in WWII. All states sponsor a Boat with the exception of California and New York who sponsor two. Western New York sponsors USS Grenadier. This plaque to the 66 men will bookend the Grenadier Memorial Torpedo. The plaque will contain the names of these Submariners* still on patrol and headed with the WWII Combat Patrol Pin. Families of these sailors will finally have a quiet place to reflect that is free to the public. The funds will be used to make and maintain the plaque, along with the refurbishing the existing plaque to the 52 boats lost. All donations will go to the USS Croaker Restoration Fund to replace borrowed funds.
I am inviting any Family members of these men to contact me at [email redacted] We would find it an honor if these Families could attend Memorial Day at the Buffalo Naval and Military Park for the Tolling of the Boats Ceremony as our guests. Thank you.
