Hello, my name is Kimberly Pearson. I’m a Licenced Professional Counselor who specialize in trauma focused therapy and the host of "You Better Call Kim”, a internet radio show. “You Better Call Kim” is a part of a strategic campaign designed to achieve the goals of raising awareness of mental health issues, increasing access to counseling services and creating a fertilization of advocacy, pastoral care and mental health professional experiences.
In July of 2016 I started the internet radio show as a way of reaching those who could benefit from counseling, but were unable to access mental health services due to the absence of insurance/finances, the lack of culturally sensitive therapy and/or the fear of the stigma associated with mental illness.
As a mental health professional, I have seen that those who are in the greatest need for counseling typically fail to receive the necessary care due to the lack of access and money. It is these individuals who typically turn to the church during times of crisis. Unfortunately, they remain underserved, without the appropriate resources to address issues, such as trauma, abuse, depression and/or anxiety. To bridge this gap, I set out on a mission to make mental health services more accessible through an internet radio show. “You Better Call Kim” is a show that provides listeners a sense of comfort, while addressing mental health issues in privacy of their home.
The name of the show came from a client, who found my business card after someone dropped it on the ground. During my initial session with this client she explained she found my business card and kept it as a joke for her close friends. As she and her friends shared their problems and emotional challenges, they would teasingly toss my card around and say “You Better Call Kim”.
This internet radio show reach an average of 500 listeners on a monthly basis, with approximately 175 listeners each week. This show has listeners all across the United States and since the beginning I have covered the cost for production and promotion.
Unfortunately I can no longer cover the cost to produce the show, which is $350 a month or an annual expense of $4200. A contribution from you will ensure this talk radio show remains on the air so people who typically would not receive counseling can learn about various mental health issues and be directed to local services.
It is my belief that if those who are living in underserved communities know more about mental health issues, they will utilize mental health services, thereby securing their mental and emotional is health, which will inevitably lead to healthier families and healthy communities.
