Medical Trip to Nicaragua

My name is Meron Girma and I am a Pre-Medical student majoring in Medical Anthropology and Global Health and Minoring in African Studies at the University of Washington. I have been fortunate enough to be apart of University of Washington's Global Medical Brigade chapter to Nicaragua. Global Medical Brigades is an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. GMB will allow me to start the impact I want to make because of the strong passion and commitment I have helping less fortunate communities. I'm so excited and honored to be selected to attend this event, but airfare and the cost for medical supplies needed to properly provide the medical care practices cost about $2,000. As a full time student and a part time employee my funds for this trip are very limited neither me or my family have the money to spare. This would be a stepping stone in a life changing journey that I am more than fortunate to be apart of. Taking this experience, I hope to further my education in medical school and continue on in Pediatrics. I observed that the education I long for will continue long after the degree I will receive. I want to eventually be able to create an organization that will secure a healthcare system adjusted to fit the needs of people in East Africa. This trip is just a step closer to my dream.
