Thailand Service Trip

Hello, my name is Micaela and I’m 15 years old. For this past year, I’ve been taking AP Human Geography and it has changed my attitude towards the world. I am more aware of the daily struggles of people living in developing countries. I will never look at my technology, school, and healthcare the same as I realize that the opportunities that I have are all but a dream to the majority of the world. I want to help make that dream more of a reality, even just a little.
I discovered Global Leadership Adventures, which is part of Terra Education, a certified B-Corporation. GLA runs summer programs that send high school students to foreign countries to serve communities. I would really like to enroll in their Thailand: Cultural Kaleidoscope Program July, 2017. For 14 days, I would serve the Thai people and get to know their culture.
During the length of the program, there will be 30 hours of working at a school to assist in teaching English and playing games with the children, as well as working in an orphanage or women’s shelter. Learning English is extremely important in the 21st century, because with the globalization of the economy, English has become the lingua franca (bridge language) of the business world. So, many jobs require fluency in English. I would also spend a whole day interacting with the elephants and learn why they are so important to Thai culture. Unfortunately, elephants are illegally poached for the ivory trade, so learning about these majestic animals and how to help them will be an enlightening experience. Some other activities include, Thai cooking class, Thai boxing, and zip lining, and learning about Buddhism’s influence on Thai society.
I feel like this experience will help me to be a better person and give me wonderful experiences that I could take with me for my whole life.
The tuition of this program costs $3,399 and flights to Thailand are well over $1300. I would also need to pay the expenditures for getting a passport, vaccinations, and any other costs during the trip. My family cannot afford to pay for much, because I have 2 older brothers in college right now and I want to raise the money on my own. I am raising funds through May 31st, 2016. I would really appreciate anything you could donate for this cause. If you spend over $50, I will send you an adorable homemade, crocheted elephant, like this one:
