Michael J School Concerts in Oz and Kaya Workshops Program 2019
(Bringing a contemporary Indonesian concert to Perth along with practical workshops fusing music and Indonesian language learning)
Music and language learning are the two ways that people communicate across cultures and express themselves through sound. The fusion of both brings amazing results, bringing joy to learners and changing attitudes.......

The Michael J School Concerts and Kaya Workshops are important in helping to build a generation of Australians and Indonesians who know, understand and trust each other, thus establishing a real and stable friendship between our two countries. .
The reality we face is that if we do not find the outstanding amount of money needed before 17 June we will be forced to cancel this important program for 2019. Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth (Inc) and Westralian Indonesian Language Teachers Association need to find another $3,350 for the Michael J School Concert on 29 August (1200 students from 18 schools are attending). And we also need a further $9,500 to help cover the four weeks of music and song workshops across 8-9 schools over the month, and the finale Community Concert on 15 Sept. The costs we need to cover are: return airfares Indonesia to Perth, living allowances for the four artists, some performance payments, and some concert production costs.
Michael Jakarimilena (Michael J or Michael Idol as he is also known) is a humble performer from Indonesia, with a strong sense of national identity with Indonesia and has proven to be a positive mentor for the younger generation in both Indonesia and Australia.
In this unique fusion of entertainment and education in language learning, Michael J and the team perform school concerts in Indonesian to audiences of students from years 6-12 who are studying Indonesian language. The experience of the concert and the workshops are interactive and participative. Large screens on stage display the lyrics of the songs performed, and students are encouraged to interact and participate using Indonesian language as much as possible.
This helps our young people to develop a greater motivation and enthusiasm for Indonesia and learning Indonesian language through this contemporary and unique way. The concerts bring together students in a positive and thrilling learning environment, showcasing through music and songs, the similarities the young people of both countries share, rather than focusing on differences. It also provides a common experience and learning context in which to share opinions and feelings and learn and practise speaking bahasa Indonesia with others.
Please help us achieve our goal for the benefit of thousands of students in our primary and secondary schools - an experience that will be life changing for many....
You can view more footage from some of last year's school concerts and school visits on the BBIP YouTube Channel .
Terima kasih! Thank you!
