In September 2014, Michele found a tumor in one of her breasts; a biopsy and scan confirmed Lobular Breast Cancer (a strain of cancer that has a nasty habit of metastasizing). Shortly after this tough diagnosis, Michele underwent a double mastectomy and surgeons were confident they had removed 100% of the cancer and didn’t recommend any further treatment. Grateful for the encouraging news, life went on as usual.
However, in August of 2018, Michele began experiencing strange symptoms, but was reluctant to chalk it up to much more than the usual “aches and pains” associated with working in the garden, female issues, working hard, etc. In mid-September, Michele experienced more concerning symptoms including increased pain and excessive fluid in her abdomen. Her physician followed up with a PET scan, which revealed devastating news; the same cancer had returned, malignant lobular breast cancer, but had now spread to the spine, ovary, pelvis and lung. Another even scarier diagnosis included “peritoneal carcinomatosis”, which means the abdominal cavity was filling with small tumors attaching themselves to other organs.
Although this diagnosis was devastating, Michele continues to kick cancer’s ass and even her oncologist is amazed at the way her body has responded to the chemo treatment. The tumors on the lung and the ovary have disappeared, the bones and spine are healing, and the carcinomatosis is stable. Michele will be entering a new treatment soon based on the award winning research by Dr. James Allison, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for Medicine last year. It is based on genome therapy. Michele and her family remain hopeful and grateful for amazing medical care and for offered and answered prayers.
Michele still has a long road ahead of her and so her children, family and friends are asking for your help to assist with unfortunate mounting medical costs. We ask that you join us if you can to raise money for this amazingly strong woman. Please continue to keep Michele in your prayers.
