My friend Michael Allan "Mick Tupelo" Dennis who many know from his time in the Vancouver and Canadian punk and 'billy scene since the early 80s. He performed with bands such as world known The Dead Cats (Godfather's of Canadian Psychobilly), The Bill of Rights , Los Nitros and The Highsiders amongst others.
Mick is also a single father of four children ages 10-16.
Mike (Mick) was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in May 2010. His neuromuscular illness is chronic and without a known cure, often fatal. His condition has gotten progressively worse over time, significantly weakening his legs, arms, hands, fingers, and quadriceps. This devastating illness has forced him to retire early from his job of nearly 20 years and soon after, cease playing music all together. His condition has led to accidents, including 2 concussions, bodily injuries, and several broken teeth, further increasing his already significant medical bills. He has basically been a ‘Shut-In’ and housebound for the past year, due to his difficulty getting around. Mike’s Neurologist has classified his condition’s Prognosis as Poor and Chronic, with a likely early death.
This past year his limbs have weakened to the point where a specialized motorized wheelchair is required to get around safely. Approval to partially fund a suitable specialized powerchair. Permobil M300 with Tilt and Elevating Seat functions, has been denied by his insurance provider (despite higher level appeals for reconsideration). Mike has to raise the money himself, and these powerchairs run in the thousands of dollars. Mike also requires regular Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, and Occupational Therapy to sustain what movement and muscle he has left, as well as custom-made ankle-foot orthosis and pain medications. Mike also now requires Gall Bladder and Hernia surgery. We are really hoping to raise some funds that could alleviate some pressure on Mike and get him closer to covering some of these costs, and allow him some quality of life again.
