Miles for Mercy Flights
Donation protected
Over the last five years, I've ridden my bike about 30,000 miles. It's been my passion since retiring early to Orcas Island. A few days ago, I was leaving Enzo's, a coffee place in Eastsound, and a local woman named Victoria asked me if I'd ever thought about riding for a cause. I hadn't. I figured most people who did that were doing a ride across several states, or even across the country. But her idea really made me think. When I mentioned I'd like to ride for a local cause, the woman she was drinking coffee with, Jennifer, suggested that I ride for the Orcas Island Mercy Flight Program. Many people on the island who need frequent medical care need frequent transportation off the island. That usually means lots of trips to and from mainland medical facilities. The cost and time add up quickly. So pilots and locals donate their time and money to save the time and money of those in need. It's a wonderful cause and we know many people who have needed this service to literally survive. I decided that perhaps my 20 or so miles per day of biking can double as a fundraising solution to help support the Mercy Flight Program. You can donate a penny per mile, $100 per mile, or whatever feels comfortable for you, for as many miles as you'd like. For instance, you could sponsor one of my daily 20-mile rides at a dollar per mile for a $20 donation. If you're on Orcas Island you'll probably see me out on the roads. Thank you for your help and please wave when you pass by!
