Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Please join us for a benefit celebration to honor our Twin Cities cultural treasure, Al Milgrom.
As most of you know, Al founded the University Film Society at the University of Minnesota in 1962, and for the subsequent 60 years Al has been our local film guru, influencing hundreds of students and filmmakers over decades. His influence was pointedly acknowledged in the Coen Brothers 2013 film, “Inside Llewyn Davis.
Al Milgrom introduced the Twin Cities film-going public to the works of Ingmar Bergman, Jean-luc Godard, Milos Forman, Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog, and dozens more cinema titans. Thanks to Al's unwavering vision and altruistic drive, we were able to experience the new wave of French and German cinema and the innovations in Czech and East European cinema as they were happening.
Al is now 92 and has just finished two films, many years in the making. As he said in a recent radio interview, “I might be the oldest emerging filmmaker in the world." Three years ago, Al had an unfortunate medical event at the Berlin Film Festival and spent three months recuperating in a very expensive Berlin hospital and rehab center.
We'd like to honor and pay homage to Al's immense contributions to our community and help offset some of his medical expenses. To that end, I hope you all can take part in this important event.
Please make a donation to our Film Guru, our Cinema Icon – our Al Milgrom.
Many thanks,
