I can, I will, and I am. That is the mantra of Savannah’s own Miss Black Georgia USA 2017, Shaunii Rawls.
Rawls was born and raised in Savannah, GA where she developed a passion for empowering youth and women through confidence and overcoming adversity. Her first experience with the power of confidence came in middle school where she was ridiculed by peers about her full body birthmark which caused discoloration on her skin.
Despite the taunting, Rawls decided to start modeling which turned into back-to-back castings and a new found confidence. Today, she uses that experience to uplift Savannah’s youth through motivational speaking, to grow her career in multimedia, and model for the likes of HP, Belk, Anthropologie, Savannah Magazine, and more. Her socialite personality and good reputation led her to become the face of Savannah as she was on the cover of the Visit Savannah Tour guide for two years in a row and the official Savannah map. Rawls also gained a six-page spread in Savannah Magazine and was 1 out of 3 chosen Savannah Magazine style mavens.
Her platform is “Strut for Sickle Cell” which brings awareness to the struggle of Sickle Cell Disease Warriors through fitness, food, and fashion. Sickle cell disease is a condition in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body and the most commonly inherited blood disorder in the United States. Rawls has watched her sister suffer yet mentally overcome the deficiencies and pain that come with the disease. Since she has seen first-hand the strength that it takes to be a sickle cell warrior, she is driven to shine a light on the disease and the people who endure through it.
“Faith has been instilled in me since I was a little girl. When I would fall, I knew I could get back up. My little sister is a living testament of what faith can do. She is the driving force in my life’s journey. It is important to know yourself and claim your destiny in order to attain your direction.”
Last year, she and her sister orchestrated a fashion show that raised over $2,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center in order to provide a program for Sickle Cell patients transitioning from pediatrics to adulthood.
Chosen out of 38 women in Georgia, her next goal is to be an advocate for health and education, to win Miss Black USA and volunteer with professionals in the fight for a cure for sickle cell disease. Currently a Savannah State Senior, Rawls will graduate Cum Laude, December 10th, with a Bachelor’s in Mass Communications from one of two accredited departments of Journalism and Mass Communications.
The journey to Miss Black USA can only be made possible by your willingness to give any amount that is set on your heart to give. Your gift will cover national fees, traveling expenses, promotional purposes, and bringing awareness to Sickle Cell Disease. Feel free to contact Rawls at any time with any questions or requests. Thank you and best of blessings in all you do.
