South Boston St. Patrick's Parade

The South Boston St. Patrick’s Day parade is a community parade hosted by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council.  The purpose of the parade is to honor all Veterans, celebrate Boston’s Historic Evacuation of The British in 1776, recognize South Boston’s Irish heritages and traditions, provide the South Boston community with a sense of neighborhood pride and belonging. As always, the parade is dedicated to our Men and Women Serving in our Armed Forces. We will also provide the greater Boston communities with an opportunity to celebrate a fun family friendly day honoring our mission. This is our 114th Annual Parade. This historic Parade is the Largest Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in the northeast, and the third largest parade in the Country.

 The Parade is funded yearly by private donations from local businesses and individuals.   In the past, funds were raised through local charity events and word of mouth donations from people who lived in South Boston and wanted to see the community event flourish.  The parade has been in existance since 1901 providing much historical value to our city and has always relied on the generosity of the citizens to support our tradition.  

As South Boston has continued to grow and change, some of the grass roots fundraising has gone by the wayside leaving the Allied War Veterans with little resources to keep the parade alive.    This year especially will be under-funded to the point that the parade may be in jeopardy of disbanding.
