Mobeen's Trip to Uganda, Kampala

Hi, my name is Mobeen Lalani and I am currently a student studying at the University of Toronto (UofT). I am so fortunate to have been raised and educated in a country where there are endless opportunities to engage with my community, numerous avenues to learn and explore from, and ways to build a foundation of equality, peace and unity. With this strong basis, it is now my chance to become a global ambassador, to put my community on the map, and widen my horizons. In order to make this happen, I need your help! BUT first, here's a little more on the program, Semester in Development (SID)...
WHERE: A few months ago, I was sent an opportunity to intern, study, and work abroad and to do a SID in Uganda, Kampala with a professional non-governmental organization (NGO).
Without looking back, I applied and recently got an acceptance to be a summer abroad student with Insight Global Education (IGE) at Makerere University!
WHAT: Through SID, I will be interning with a Ugandan public health sector NGO, where I will be learning and applying multiple methods of implementations within the Ugandan community. From attaining real-life experience through fieldwork and applying previous learnt content from my studies at UofT, I will also be studying courses including, Development in Africa and Peace, Recovery and Development. Personally, I hope this opportunity allows me to be out of my comfort zone and challenges my beliefs on a day to day basis!
WHY: IGE diverges from the common voluntourism idea of international work and study. This program allows for active participation and listening of those who live in Uganda and allows students to learn from locals on how they live in order to attain a better quality of life. This method of participation and communication is a very important in building a community which embraces active listening and knowledge sharing. IGE does not simply send student volunteers into developing countries, but rather gives students an opportunity to live a new way of life in an unfamiliar country. The students get an oppurunity to collaboratively work together with those around them to handle unexpected and different situations.
WHEN: The SID will be from May 30th – August 24th 2018.
HOW: The reason behind this page is because I need your help and support in order to make my dream of traveling, studying, and interning abroad possible.
Expense Breakdown:
Program Fees: $5,450 USD ($6,983.03 CAD)

Round Trip Flight: Approx. $1,600 CAD
Day-to-day Necessities for 90 Days: $1,700 CAD
- Including, but not limited to: food/groceries, transportation, and phone and internet.
Total: $10,283.03
