Mozart - 3 New Flute Discoveries CD

Donation protected

James Strauss - flutist extraordinaire- presents a fundraising campaign to produce a recording of 3 new Mozart flute discoveries from 2016. The recording will be made with the Orchestre Symphonique de Strasbourg under conductor Manuel Mendoza. We also have virtuoso Italian futist Andrea Mogavero asa special guest playing n the Concertante.

The purpose of the fundraising campaign would be to produce a professional recording. The money would be used to pay artist fees and recording expenses. We hope that we can meet our goal before Mozart's 261st birthday on January 27, 2017!

The video above contains some demo recordings of the works in question. The quality of the music speaks for itself, and a recording would be a great addition to any music lover's collection.

The first piece is a flute concerto written by Johann Baptist Wendling, friend and colleague of Mozart and flutist in the famous Mannheim Court Orchestra. Mozart wrote to his father on 22 November 1777 that he had collaborated with Wendling on a flute concerto, supplying wind parts. This concerto, catalogued GUN 20 by musicologist Emily Gunson, appears to be this concerto.

The second piece is centered around a mysterious manuscript which surfaced recently in Poland of an oboe concerto attributed to Mozart. On 25 July 1777, a flutist named Johann Thomas Cassel rehearsed a flute concerto written by Mozart in Salzburg. At this point, Mozart's other known flute concerti had not yet been written, so it seemed likely that we are missing one of them. The oboe concerto manuscript from Poland could plausibly be an arrangement of material that likely could be this concerto. We present here a reconstruction expertly done by fortepianist Anders Muskens.

The final piece is an arrangement of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos K. 448 as a sinfonia concertante for two flutes. It is attributed to the Dutch publisher C.G. Menzel, and is orchestrated for 2 solo flutes, 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and strings. It appears to have been made with the new keyed flutes of the early to mid 19th century in mind, as the range and technical capabilities of the flute parts extend beyond those of a one key traverso.

We hope you enjoy the music, and thank you for helping us reach our project!
