THE FUTURE IS NOW

If you could shape the future – what would you contribute?
Rwanda and other African nations still feel the effects of colonialism and postcolonial structures are an ongoing reality. None of us is able to change the past, but we can all learn from it in order to build a better future.
We – a diverse group of artists from Rwanda, Kenya and Germany – would like to create a platform where every story can be told and heard. In a world, where white supremacy is real, where even African stories are told by white people, where most of the main film or book characters are white men, narratives need to be changed, as well as our mindsets.
During a two-day workshop on Afrofuturism, we – together with other emerging and established artists - will look for the prints of a forgotten future and to explore ways of how to rediscover and re-imagine our past, our identities and our world. Much of Afrofuturism borrows from the past to define the future. It is a portal through which we can explore spirituality, technology and build new worlds. It is not just based on science fiction, but it is also about imagining different spaces of creative thought that does not put our identities in a box.
This project will be an opportunity for artists and people interested in writing and poetry to express themselves without constraint, to find their voice, their roots and themselves in one way or another. The pieces of poetry, music and art that we will create during the workshop, will be represented and performed during an evening at Goethe-Institut Kigali. This final poetry event will allow participants to share their stories with more people, to speak up and to give more people an idea of how Africans can see themselves in the future, both in fiction and in reality.
All the arrangements are in place, so we're hoping to raise 1500€ in the next two weeks so the project can be realized as planned. All donations will be used to pay workshop expenses, transportation and the costs that incur for the performance evening, including photography and videography which will allow us to share as much as possible with everyone who cannot attend the event.
We would also like to print a booklet with all the works of art that will be created during the workshop. So, if we manage to raise enough money, each donor will receive one free copy!
Thank you for your time, and please share our story and consider making a donation.
Sincerely,
Yule, Checkmate, Kevin, Angell & 1key
