Spartans Abroad: DC & NY
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." -Saint Augustine.
In June 2018, approximately 25 high school students will travel to Washington D.C and New York City with the Spartans Abroad Program. This program allows students the opportunity to travel and receive 0.5 elective credit toward their high school diploma. Students will spend 6 days traveling; 3 days in Washington D.C. and 3 days in New York City. For many students, this will be their first time on an airplane. For some, it will be their first time out of North Carolina. These students have the opportunity to see some of the most influential documents, important buildings and structures, and experience culture they would not otherwise get in their hometown.
Travel is very important to the three teachers who are planning this trip. It is so important that they are planning this trip completely on their own time. This is a non-school sponsored trip, which is why you don't see a school name attached. The school is an early college public school where students are taking high school and college classes at the same time. Students can graduate with their high school diploma and an Associate degree. The school is very small and is non-traditional. A large portion are on free-and-reduced lunch. The teachers strive to bring the best opportunities for the students and hope to spark curiosity and encourage future travel.
The purpose isn't to completely pay for the trip. We hope to make the trip more affordable and to cut costs by around 10%. Students will be participating in many other fundraising opportunities in order to bring their travel cost down. We like to refer to this as "sweat equity". We will be forever thankful for any amount donated toward the expenses of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Every donation over $20 will receive a post card from either D.C. or New York! Thank you for your support!
