MSW Study Abroad Trip in Chile

Donation protected
As a first generation Mexican-American I have been the first in my family to not only have obtained a higher education, but also pursued a master’s degree. Being part of a graduate program has provided me with new and exciting experiences throughout my classes. One particular value that has been evident for me has been in recognizing the central importance of human relationships. In doing so, I have been able to become more culturally competent in understanding the many diverse cultures that exist in Southern California.

However, as a social work student I acknowledge that I have a responsibility in continuously obtaining education to understand the nature of social diversity with respect to culture, ethnicity, race, etc. I believe that studying abroad will provide me with the experience to gain additional knowledge through exploring a country with different principles and beliefs than those of the United States. I am interested in gaining more knowledge of another culture through studying abroad and exploring more diverse and innovative ideas.

I have been selected as 1 of the 6 students to study abroad in the beautiful country of Chile for this upcoming summer with California State University, Fullerton for my Masters of Social Work program. Additionally, I will have the opportunity to collaborate with INACAP’s social work students (Chile’s private university) where I will be able to share my knowledge and experience of grad school.

By studying abroad, I will gain skills and understandings that will contribute to my career and educational goals. Not only will I have gained experience of the Chilean culture and policies but will also have attained class credit from enrollment in the elective course of International Social Work. There is no doubt that studying abroad in Chile will enhance my cultural competence, and will provide me the chance to integrate the skills I attain in this journey into my future education and career-related experience.

Unfortunately, there is a financial strain that I am unable to overcome. I come to you with a humble and vulnerable heart and ask for any help you may provide. The estimated cost for the flight and hotel stay is $2,600 along with the $2,180 for my tuition fee brings the total cost for this once in a lifetime opportunity to $4780. I thank you all in advance for your generosity. Whether it’s a dollar or two, it will go a long way in my vocation of making this world a better place. Thank you for taking the time to read this and God Bless.
