New Shelter for Caravan Migrants
Donation protected
Since January 4th, 2019 police have attempted to evict caravan migrants from the "Contra Viento y Marea" (formerly Benito Juarez) shelter in Zona Norte, Tijuana. The lease is up on the building and there is no possibility for the asylum seekers to remain in the shelter. Currently, 60-90 migrants have chosen to remain in the shelter in the hopes that representatives from their groups can find a new space that can accommodate the 150 migrant awaiting asylum into the US.
As of January 9th, Mexican Federal Police have surrounded the shelter for six days, threatening teargas and forcibly removing those inside and limiting access to medics, food, water, and sanitation. The federal police have been seen sending texts to each other comparing migrants to "cockroaches", and discussing the eviction as "cleaning out the filth", while also threatening to use tear gas in the building to force out the group that includes children. The caravan migrants need to get out of this situation in which a hostile police force surrounds them and is depriving them of basic needs!
As a result, time is of the essence to raise the funds for a new shelter in which migrants can set the terms for how they want to live while waiting for asylum and control how their daily needs are met all along the way.
Here's what we need:
$60,000 in funds to go towards the new shelter that will be selected by representatives from the caravan migrants at Benito Juarez.
What this amount covers:
12 months rent
Sanitation services (porta-potties, garbage pick-up)
We need to house 90 families, and every contribution will help us to realize that!
We will be working directly with the caravan migrants to distribute these funds towards the new shelter. Due to the imminent eviction of the "Contra Viento y Marea" shelter, time is of the essence to raise these funds while a new shelter is selected!
This fundraiser is organized by a coalition started by AbolishICE San Francisco.
CO-SPONSORS: San Gabriel Valley Mutual Aid
The situation at the border is very fluid - if for any reason the people living at the Benito Juarez shelter decide that they do not want to establish a new shelter and it is not possible to give funds directly to the caravaneros, funds will go to Enclave Caracol, an established hub for migrant support and autonomous community building in Tijuana, B.C.
