Solar Lights for the Himalayas

Donation protected
Hi name is Keshav Krishna

I have been accepted to join the Global Himalayan Expedition for 2017.

The goal of this expedition is to bring solar power to remote communities living in the Ladakh region of the Indian Himalayas.

Ladakh, ("land of high passes") is a region of North India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), which currently extends from the Kunlun mountain range to the great Himalayas in the south.  It is inhabited by people of both Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent.  Ladakh is one of the most sparsely populated regions in world, with its culture and histories are closely related to that of the Tibet region. It is one of the most elevated and coldest inhabited regions of the world. The winter temperatures drop to as low as -30 Deg C., with most areas becoming inaccessible due to heavy snowfall on the two main highways connecting the region with the rest of the country. The only way to access the region is then by air transport. The region is known for its  famous Pashmina goats, the wool from which is used to make woolen clothes for export purposes. The people of the region live on farms, with the main occupation being agriculture, tourism, handicrafts, and government jobs.

What is the Problem?

Many of the villages lay at an average trek distance of 4-5days from the nearest motorable roads. Due to the inhospitable terrain, the development of these villages has thus been very limited.

There is no mobile connectivity in these villages and very few medical facilities limited to some villages only. All the people living in these villages fall below the poverty line and are only able to sustain their basic livelihood from the crops they grow and animals they rear.

What are we doing?

Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE) seeks to provide clean energy, education and wireless connectivity access through solar power, thereby  improving the living standards of the rural population. The initiative focuses on implementing a holistic development model for the rural un-electrified Himalayan communities by providing energy access through solar micro-grids for these remote villages located in the higher reaches of the Himalaya.

This July, along with a group of international volunteers, I'll trek 9 days through the Himalayas to Shadé, a remote village which has no electrical grid access, where I'll help install solar micro-grids which will serve to power the village with sustainable, clean electricity.

What I need you to do?

In order to do on this I require your help to send me there.

My funding goal of $6000 AUD will be used towards purchasing any outdoor gear  needed for this trip, the travel costs of getting to Shadé and a share of the costs of the solar micro grid.

Your donations will help to support make a meaningful difference in the lives of many, as you would be helping to promote the use of clean energy, as well as help promote sustainable living to one of the most rare communities in the world.

Every dollar, like and share helps and is appreciated greatly.

Thank you
Keshav
