Afro & Indigenous Nicaraguan Dress
Donation protected
Hola, my name is Jasmine . I am an independent fashion historian and co-host of Unravel: A Fashion Podcast. In June, I will present a paper entitled “Recuerdos de Nicaragua: Remembering the Dress of Nicaragua’s Indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples in German and Moravian Postcards” at the Progressive Connexions: Fashion and Photography Conference in Palermo, Italy.
This opportunity is very important to me as an Afro-Nicaraguan American and a fashion historian, because I will share with an international audience the history and culture of Nicaragua's indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, which are consistently underrepresented and economically underserved. As of yet, the dress and material culture of the indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in the Nicaraguan Miskito coast has not been fully researched. In addition, this is the first conference at which I will have ever presented in my academic life.
In this paper, I will present my research on the clothing of Miskito coastal communities, including the indigenous Miskito, the Rama, and the Mayagna tribal groups, along with the Afro-descendent Garifuna and
Creole people, and the impact German missionaries had on their native dress. Your donations will help me cover the following:
- Conference fees 255 Euro = $310
- Travel costs to Palermo, Italy from New York City
- Accomaditions (they will be modest)
All donors will receive a digital copy of my paper.
$10 donors and up will receive a personalized thank you shout-out on an episode of Unravel: A Fashion Podcast.
